Are the Symptoms of a Panic Attack Grave?
Panic attacks can occur anywhere anytime. You may be in the comfort of your own home, listening to music or reading a book, when all of a sudden, you begin to manifest the physical and emotional symptoms. You may also experience anxiety attacks in public. While you are out in the street or eating in public, you can have these attacks. Certainly, these anxiety attacks can make anyone utterly vulnerable. Moreover, panic attacks can lead to feelings of humiliation or embarrassment. There are instances in which individuals who are first-time sufferers refrain from engaging in social situations for fear that they will have repeated panic attacks. These attacks, without a doubt, can drive a sufferer to have avoidance behavior.
The symptoms of a panic attack
During the onset of an attack, you may experience lightheadedness, smothering sensations, heart palpitations, abdominal discomfort, chest pain, nausea, and hyperventilation. You may also feel hot flushes or sudden chills, numbness or tingling sensations. Aside from these, there are also emotional reactions. Panic attack sufferers feel stress, anxiety, and fear, which are as hard as the physical reactions. All these physical and emotional reactions can drive a sufferer to seek immediate attention from medical professionals. Sufferers should remember that the symptoms of a panic attack can be seemingly grave, but these are actually generally harmless.
The triggers of a panic attack
Panic attacks are one of the most common anxiety disorders. Worldwide, millions of people suffer from panic attacks. These attacks have different triggers. Most commonly, these attacks are caused by severe anxiety and stress. Panic attacks also occur when one exposed to unfamiliar situations, such as when being introduced to an important person or when told to speak in front of a crowd. Researchers also attribute panic attacks to biochemistry and heredity. Hormonal imbalances can trigger a panic attack. There are also cases in which panic attacks occur among members of the same family.
How to treat panic attacks
There are treatment methods available for panic attack sufferers. These available treatment methods include medication drugs, therapy and alternative methods like relaxation techniques, meditation practices, controlled breathing and muscle relaxation.
Therapy
Medical professionals consider therapy as the most effective treatment method for panic attacks. This can be psychotherapy, exposure therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy. A qualified health care professional should administer therapy. Panic attack sufferers should be able to identify the triggers and understand their general condition. In doing so, they can handle panic attacks well.
Medication drugs
A medical professional should prescribe medication drugs to panic attack sufferers. As some medication drugs can be habit-forming, panic attack sufferers should control their use of this treatment method. According to researchers, the most effective medication drugs are anti-depressants.
Alternative methods
Aside from the traditional treatment methods, such as therapy and medication drugs, there are also alternative methods available for panic attack sufferers. These alternative methods, such as relaxation techniques, can reduce the intensity and frequency of panic attacks. Alternative methods can be combined with therapy and medication drugs. Panic attack sufferers, however, should consult medical professionals first before trying any of these treatment methods.
