Are You Anxiety Prone?

Published at 7:45 am under Anxiety Center

Have you ever wondered why some people are prone to anxiety and some not? Complex isnt it! Well I guess it all depends on the way we think. If we do irrational and illogical assumptions, we are bound to suffer from worries, stress and anxiety, even in a simple situation where other people with a logical mindset would handle it without worry or anxiety. But the main problem with us remains, that we think irrationally and on top of it we dont even realize it.

So, the key to change the way we think is to understand why we are thinking irrationally. There are faulty assumptions which are responsible for irrational thoughts. Cognitive-behavioral therapy says that there are twelve wrong assumptions which make the basic of most irrational thoughts. These are referred to as mental missteps:

1. Everybody should love me and support me. If they dont that means I must be completely atrocious and unlovable.

2. I should always be able to do anything successfully and should be competent in every situation; otherwise I am a complete failure.

3. I deserve it when things go wrong with me.

4. Even if I do not like to feel I have to accept that I cant do anything.

5. My problems have been there for a long time and theres no way to fix them now.

6. I should worry about it continuously; about a problem.

7. Outside influences are unlucky and responsible for my terrible feelings. Since I do not have control, I will keep feeling bad and wait till these outside influences change.

8. It is right to get upset about the people who are close to us when they have serious problem.

9. I want a particular crying shoulder, a person on whom I can depend.

10. I can easily avoid thinking about a problem than take responsibility of the situation.

11. Evil people must be punished severely, or else I have the right to demand a punishment for them.

12. I must find out the solution to every problem because if I dont, it will be appalling.

Do you get similar thoughts? If you have experienced these types of mental missteps, then you have identified the main culprit behind anxiety. The main belief that works behind the assumptions is Either this must be true, or this will happen. The first step towards better way of thinking is to identify wrong assumptions and to correct them. If you find it impossible to do it alone, seek the help of a counselor. Take the first step today!
