Social Anxiety Disorder

Published by admin under Anxiety Center

Social anxiety disorder is characterized by a persistent fear of any kind of social interactions and the feeling of intense embarrassment or humiliation, apparently without reason. The patients of this disorder are always anxious of being judged poorly by others and as a result start avoiding social interaction completely. Whenever such people face any situation where interaction with others cannot be avoided, they suffer extreme anxiety and nervousness. In chronic cases such people start showing extreme symptoms even when they anticipate a social situation. This anxiety is manifested in external physical symptoms such as palpitations, sweating, trembling, flushing or blushing.

Sometimes it is difficult to differentiate the normal social anxiety that every individual feels to some extent from this chronic condition. Everyone has some degree of social anxiety in them, yet when such anxiety becomes so overriding that the person starts avoiding all social interactions as a result of his anxiety and the physical symptoms cause him distress beyond natural parameters, it is clear that it is a result of this disorder. Most often, close family members or friends can recognize this, since they have a better perspective of the patients suffering.

Social anxiety disorder can be classified into three different types. First is a performance-oriented social anxiety disorder that affects a person only when he is performing in front of an audience, as when giving public speeches, or presentations.

The second type of this disorder is a general social anxiety disorder where a person is unnaturally anxious in various social situations like parties, meetings and interviews.

The third and most chronic type is avoidant personality disorder, which is more common in males than females and starts usually at a very young age. Such people are able to make very few friends and often opt not to get married. These people avoid all opportunities for social interactions and live with a constant fear of being ridiculed and judged by all around them.

Common Anxiety Disorders

Published by admin under Anxiety Center

Anxiety and fear are natural reactions to threatening situations. Your body has a fight or flight reactionyour heart races, you breathe faster, you sweat, and your stomach and head may ache. Thats all normal if youre really in danger. But if these reactions keep occurring when youre not in danger to the point where they disrupt your life, theyre called anxiety disorders. No one knows exactly what causes anxiety disorders.

Heredity, stress, and changes in the brain probably play a part. Over their lifetimes, about 25% of Americans experience some form of anxiety disorder, and about 17% of these have very severe anxiety every year. Women are more likely than men to be affected. The good news is that many treatments are available to relieve anxiety disorders. These are the most common types of anxiety disorder:

Generalized anxiety disorder is a pattern of serious anxiety and worry that lasts 6 months or more. The anxiety is out of proportion to the situation. Typically, the worries focus on health, safety, and work responsibilities. People with this disorder have three or more of these signs and symptoms: muscle tension, restlessness, fatigue, trouble concentrating, irritability, and sleep disturbances (too much or too little sleep).

Panic disorder causes panic attacksrepeated, unpredictable, and irrational attacks of fear and anxiety. Within 10 to 20 minutes of the start of a panic attack, a person develops at least four of these signs and symptoms: shortness of breath, dizziness or feeling faint, heart palpitations, nausea, a choking sensation, sweating, flushing, chills, trembling, numbness or tingling, chest pain or discomfort, feeling afraid of dying or losing control, and feeling detached from reality. The symptoms are usually strongest within 10 minutes and go away minutes later, although some panic attacks last for hours.

Social anxiety disorder, also called social phobia, is a persistent and irrational fear of social or performance situations, such as parties and picnics. Many people feel uncomfortable in these situations, but someone with social phobia is so fearful that he may avoid these situations entirely. Being in social situations can cause him great distress and may trigger a panic attack. During and after the experience, he cant stop thinking about his words and actions and criticizing himself. This disorder affects men and women equally, and also occurs in children.

Posttraumatic stress disorder is a response to the memory of physical or emotional trauma. This disorder can develop if youve experienced an extremely stressful, usually life-threatening event, such as a natural disaster, war, terrorism, assault, sexual abuse, or domestic abuse. Someone with this problem repeatedly relives the event or has dreams about it, avoids people, places, and objects that remind him of the event, or even loses interest in life. He may also become irritable, have difficulty concentrating, and have trouble sleeping.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder makes a person feel that he must perform an ordinary action, such as hand washing, so often that he cant get on with his normal activities. Someone with this disorder has a persistent, unwanted, intrusive thought (an obsession), and responds with an action (a compulsion) in an attempt to reduce overwhelming anxiety. They know the behavior is excessive, but cant stop themselves. This disorder, which affects men and women equally, can develop at any time, but is usually diagnosed in young adults.

Procedural anxiety is extreme fear of medical procedures (more than normal anxiety) that interferes with daily activities. For days or weeks before a procedure, the person worries all the time, cant sleep, and is restless, nervous, apprehensive, and tense. This disorder can be caused by a previous traumatic experience, fear of pain, or fear of the unfamiliar.

Getting to Know Anxiety

Published by admin under Anxiety Center

Have you ever been in a situation, where you felt uneasy because of something you think you may have forgotten to do, such as switching off an appliance at home, or perhaps a feeling that you annoyed someone whom you wanted to get along with really well. If you have experienced such feelings and worse on a regular basis, then you most probably are a victim of anxiety attacks.

All of us, to some extent, have experienced anxiety and at different levels. There are some things you may know about anxiety, and some things that you may not be familiar with. So in order to be prepared for your next encounter with a feeling of anxiety, you need to get to know what anxiety is before it escalates into a panic attack.

Anxiety is simply the feeling of discomfort, uneasiness and or fear of what may eventually happen resulting from a perceived, imagined, or a real threatening condition. On the extreme end panic attacks can occur due to heightened feelings of anxiety.

There are two main categories of symptoms during an anxiety/panic attack and these are physical and emotional symptoms. Physical symptoms include difficulty in breathing, shaking , sensations of heat, rapid heartbeat and fatigue. Whereas emotional symptoms deal with excessive worrying, depression, fear, irritability and lack of focus.

Now you may be thinking, that anxiety is only caused in situations where you are faced with an impeding threat and have no other option but to face it. In reality, this is not true as anxiety can occur in unthreatening conditions too . For example, imagine that you have been chosen to speak in front of a large audience and the reason you were picked amongst your other hundred colleagues is because you are regarded as the best. In such an encounter, you will feel proud that you were picked from a hundred other people but at the same time the thought of having to speak in front of a large crowd can trigger anxiety. In such cases you get a mixed feeling of both positive and negative anxiety.

In spite of the negative impression we have for anxiety, it is not dangerous in any way what so ever. If you thought that anxiety is dangerous and will threaten your health then you need to think again, because all this is merely a false perception of anxiety. Feeling a little shaky and or having a feeling of butterflies in the stomach is pretty normal.

Panic attacks however, are far more dangerous and should be a concern to your health. Panic can sometimes result in dizziness, blurred vision, difficulty in breathing due to a tight chest and in extreme scenarios a victim can feel faintish where they may or may not, end up unconscious. The major problem with panic attacks is that most victims think they are going through a stroke and this further aggravates the current condition. So the best way to differentiate anxiety from any serious illness is to consult a medical expert on a regular basis.

So all in all you must understand that the feeling of anxiety is not bad in any way, in fact its more of a defensive inherent feeling which protects us from possible danger by engaging a response within us in fight or flight situations. So its not the bad guy, you just have to learn how to control it.

Anxiety - Things You Must Avoid In Order To Get The Right Anxiety Treatment

Published by admin under Anxiety Center

Getting the right anxiety treatment is difficult, even today. Sometimes it can make things even worse, especially when you do not find the right doctor or get the wrong therapy. Sofia, one of my friends, had this bad luck.

After Sofia gave birth to a wonderful girl about five years ago her problems began. She has always been suffering from an eating disorder but now she got a depression as well. Plus panic and anxiety disorders.

Too much? Well, that is not all. She was smart enough to look for professional help. She went to a psychologist for a full year without any success. She got medications and tried Paxil, Zoloft, Neurontin and others. They did more harm than help. The drugs made her either very sleepy or the opposite.

Sofia ended up totally frustrated and even more anxious and depressed. The things began to change when she consulted a psychiatrist who did really care. He made a full check up. He listened to all her problems and made notes about all the drugs she had used before already with no success.

The psychiatrist was specialized in anxiety and also eating disorders. That is why he knew more than an average MD about all the things. He was also more knowledgeable than a psychologist. A psychologist is not an MD. The psychiatrist found out that one of her problems was Dopamine and not Serotonin. She mostly got medications for Serotonin before.

Sofia finally found somebody who listened and took care of the problem carefully. Make sure your doctor knows about brain chemistry and is specialized in the problems you have. Otherwise you may end up frustrated and with therapies that make your problems even worse.

Anxiety Disorder Treatments - How To Choose

Published by admin under Anxiety Center

Anxiety disorder treatments offer the ability to stop worrying. Those that suffer from this condition often face day in and day out of worrying. They fight to find a way to do the simple things that many people take for granted. Yet, if you are facing anxiety disorder symptoms, you can and you should seek out the help that you need for them. Anxiety disorder treatments vary from person to person, but the fact is that people can find the help that they need so badly.

The first thing to do is to be diagnosed with anxiety disorder. You likely know what your anxiety disorder symptoms are. They may be things like excessive worry, unfounded tension, fears of embarrassment and frustration and many others. If you find yourself in this situation, you should seek out a trusted doctor. While this is often a big step for someone that is facing anxiety panic disorder or any form of anxiety disorder, it is the hardest part yet it is the beginning of the end of worry.

Your doctor will provide you with a bit of testing. You will likely be tested to determine if you have a specific type of anxiety disorder such as obsessive compulsive disorder, separation anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder or several other conditions. Once this ruling is done, the right form of anxiety disorder treatment will be pursued.

Treatments are likely to be in several forms:

Psychotherapy: You will work with a doctor to learn how to control your anxiety disorder symptoms. This will include learning how to relax when it seems nearly impossible to do. Additionally, you will learn how to reduce stresses in your life, recognize panic attacks, and how to realize that life does not have to be a constant state of worry.

Medications: Anti anxiety medications are available to help as an anxiety disorder treatment. These medications include Diazepam and Lorazepam as well as many others. Your doctor can work with you to select the medication that is right for your condition. Often anti depression medications can be helpful as well.

Self Help: In self help for anxiety panic disorder or other forms of anxiety disorders is also another treatment option available. You can find several herbal remedies that have shown to improve your overall state of well being and to relieve anxiety disorder symptoms. These supplements can naturally and effectively help to relieve your condition.

Anxiety disorder symptoms are often life altering. What you may not realize is that you can have a life without worry, tension and stress. The fact is that once you are in this state of being for so long, you may not realize that there is help out there for you. Yet, anxiety disorder treatments are available and can benefit you significantly. Seeking out diagnosis and then treatment options is the path to less worry overall.

Anxiety Producers - They Suck!

Published by admin under Anxiety Center

It took me less than 3 minutes to write this list of anxiety producers and they suck, as some kids would say in the language of today. You can think of some anxiety producers too. I want you to think of ways that these anxiety producers can be used to your advantage. How can stress, anxiety and panic be turned around to work for you instead of against you? Here is the list I jotted down. This is the working against you scenario.

Bills: Will I have enough money to pay everything this month?

Money: Did I make enough money to pay all the bills I have?

Illness: Am I getting ill from worry and missing work therefore losing money that I need to pay the bills?

Travel: Can I afford to travel to my new job that pays me more money so that I can pay the bills?

Kids: How will I be able to spend time with the kids if I am travelling to my better paying job?

Pregnancy: If I get pregnant will this effect my position in my new job?

Weather: When I am travelling in bad weather will I be able to get home each day to see the kids?

Pets: Who will look after the pets if we are travelling or I have to stay away from home for a few days?

Clothes: I will need new clothes for my new job and that will take money out of my budget to pay the bills.

Cars: I am travelling more because of my new job, my old car needs to be fixed and this costs money.

Relationships of all kinds: Now that there is so much stress, anxiety and panic, will my relationship survive?

Does this remind you of the nursery rhyme about the cat that swallowed the mouse that swallowed the cheese and so on?

Need I go on? You get the picture here.

If we perceive a situation as stressful, feel anxious about it and that anxiousness becomes panic, the pattern of our lives can be sent on a roller coaster ride that is never ending. We have to find ways to eliminate the cycle or if left unchecked and left to its own devices these disorders can turn into depression or a combination of mental discordance.

A good friend of mine is a Registered Practical Nurse and we got together to discuss what could be done to aid and stop the cycle of anxiety and its related disorders.

We came up with these suggestions to get everyone thinking about their own situations and in examining these situations we felt that was a good start to self-realization.

If you do not know the reasons why you feel or act the way you do, then it can be frustrating when you are looking for ways to help yourself or even telling a health professional how you are feeling.

Identify what your situation is by really being honest about the underlying feeling or situations that have occurred or are occurring now. Remember, that in many cases, you can tell yourself that the situation is only a memory and is not happening at this moment in time therefore it cannot hurt you.

Acknowledging that something has happened or is happening to you now is a good starting point to begin the recovery process.

Venting or talking to others perhaps in a group setting can help you by actually hearing yourself talk about your issues out loud. Hearing other people in the group helps you realize you are not alone in this healing process.

Do not expect to get a quick fix from the issues you have as they probably took some time to become ingrained in your subconscious mind.

We called the group setting a form of the buddy system. You may find a common thread with another person and pair up with each other. Making use of a friend who is going to a group for help just as you are can be beneficial to both parties as you become a sounding board for each other.

This also takes time because a sense of trust and familiarity has to develop. If you are in a group for anxiety it is often difficult to open up easily. If a connection is to be made it will be and you will know when and if it is in agreement with all concerned.

Family members make good buddies because you are related in blood and life. This gives you an advantage over developing a relationship with someone who has no idea of your history.

Buddy up with someone when you have to do or are about to be in an anxiety-producing situation. Gang up on the anxiety. An example might be when you go to the doctors office and perhaps there will be unsettling news about a test result or an upcoming surgical procedure.Having moral and physical support builds inner strength.

There is a saying that goes like this. You feel taller when someone is with you, you do not feel ground into the floor. The feelings of vulnerability are decreased therefore decreasing your anxiety, perhaps even eliminating it in this circumstance.

Identify the reasons for your anxiety. Be honest with your personal reasons . Remember, it may be a memory and cannot hurt you. Acknowledge, vent, hear, expect no quick fixes, do your emotional work, use the buddy system, build trust, use your family, gang up on anxiety, build strength, decrease and eliminate anxiety. Your recovery is waiting for you.

How to Stop an Anxiety Panic Attack

Published by admin under Anxiety Center

An anxiety panic attack can play havoc with your body as well as the ability to live your life in a normal and enjoyable fashion. By taking the time to learn about how anxiety and panic attacks are caused and treatment techniques you can take back control of your life; however.

One of the first things that should be understood about anxiety and panic attacks is that while the symptoms they create are quite severe the biological response behind them is actually a normal reaction from the human body. When the body perceives fear, the brain begins to release adrenaline. This creates a sudden rush of blood as the heart begins to pound harder. The entire body experiences an increase of blood flow while at the same time respiration increases, resulting in faster breathing. As we know, the symptoms typically only grow worse from there if you are not able to stop the panic attack.

There are techniques that can be utilized in order to bring the symptoms of a panic attack back under control. Breathing techniques are an excellent way to control panic attacks; however, it order for this attack to work you must be able to remain rather calm during the attack. Therefore, it is best to practice this technique during times when you are not feeling panicked and can remain calm. The first step in using this technique is to monitor your breathing. Make sure that you are breathing from your diaphragm rather than your upper chest, as is a normal reaction during a panic attack. Focus on taking deep breaths and exhaling all of the air. This helps to maintain the balance between carbon dioxide and oxygen in the body. Be aware, that this technique does require practice; however, as you use it you will notice that you are able to regain control much quicker using this method. With regular practice, this method is a great way to stop your panic from becoming a full blown anxiety panic attack.

Relaxation techniques are also a great way to get your panic and anxiety under control before it becomes a full attack. Listening to relaxing music can prove to be very beneficial. You may also find that listening to the sounds of nature can be calming too. Consider options such as ocean waves. Try listening to whatever CD or tape youve selected and instruct yourself to relax while you are listening to it. Close your eyes and focus on taking deep, slow breaths as your body begins to relax. This is also a good technique to use right before you go to sleep to help you get a better night of rest, which produces a less stressful day. It is important to understand that this technique may also take some time and practice in order to enjoy the full benefits of relaxation.

While learning how to relax and take back control of your panic and anxiety will take some time and dedication, the benefits are certainly well worth it. Before long you will be able to use these techniques in order to stop an anxiety panic attack before it becomes full blown.

Anxiety - Questions Asked By Concerned Candidates

Published by admin under Anxiety Center

What is anxiety is a question asked by many people who tend to feel confused when trying to decipher the difference between this illness as it is seen and that of others. Is anxiety an illness - is it an ailment or is it a disorder - yes anxiety is classed as all three. Different stages denote whether it is an illness or a disorder.

For the severe cases that show signs of stress which is escalating out of control is a sure way of telling that the patient is suffering from an anxiety disorder.

Anxiety gives out a feeling of uneasiness. At some stage in a persons life there will have been times where they have experienced the discomfort of anxiety with anxious moments. Moments like this can arise when faced with dilemmas otherwise seen as stressful situations, for example before going for a job interview - sitting for an exam or during that of a worrying time through illness.

Most questions asked once again by concerned candidates is it normal to feel anxious when faced agains`t something difficult or dangerous, yes everyone can suffer from anxious bouts - it is not an unusual response to stressful situations. It has been known to improve performance in some cases

However, in the UK the one in ten people that suffer from anxiety are cases of severity where the anxiety interferes with their normal daily lifestyle. Excessive anxiety is notably directed or associated with many other psychiatric conditions, like depression. Anxiety is without doubt considered abnormal when the signs or symptoms hang around longer than necessary - in other words prolonged.\r Another strong cause behind prognosis of severity is when the anxiety bouts develop to a stage where it takes hold over on how you live your life - once again meaning how it interferes with day to day activities.

If this being the case then those anxious events is classed as an anxiety disorder - where medical treatment is needed

The physical symptoms of anxiety are identified by how the brain sends signals to other parts of the body preparing for a fight or flight reaction. The human brain releases stress hormones, which includes adrenaline. Common symptoms that can occur are: abdominal discomfort, rapid heartbeat or palpitations, dizziness, diarrhoea, shortness of breath, dry mouth, tightness or pain in chest, frequent urination or finding it difficult to swallow.

Anxiety is seen as the culprit when a mental health problem is recognised, such as depression, alcohol abuse, personality disorder, even withdrawal from the long-term use of drugs or tranquillisers.

The signs to look out for when psychological anxiety is present are: inability to concentrate, fear of madness, insomnia, irritability or anger - even the common feeling of discomfort where loss of control of your actions is evident - which is a familiar symptom high on the list of the psychological side. Some types of anxieties are closely associated with physical illnesses which - can be a thyroid disorder. If treatment takes place for whatever the diagnosed illness is, then the anxiety can improve over time.

If at any time that you or a member of the family even a close friend are showing signs of stress related concerns then please consult with your doctor - especially before buying over the counter medication.

Finding An Effective Anxiety Treatment

Published by admin under Anxiety Center

Anxiety is a serious disorder, which effects are getting even more serious in todays modern times. The stress that nowadays people are put down on is so great, that they cannot handle it and often fall into despair. Our daily routine is so fast and nervous, that we rarely have the time to think about the after effects this routine can cause us. Anxiety problems are psychological illness, caused by stressful factors in our lives. They have to be taken seriously and treated relatively.

Anxiety treatment is a serious procedure that requires your active attention and involvement in the whole therapeutic process. You should always consult with your physician in case you have some anxiety symptoms, which are somehow hard to find. Anxiety treatment is ABSOLUTELY necessary if you feel that you have been put to a large amount of stress. Although they look light, anxiety problems are not as harmless as they may seem.

The one problem which anxiety can cause is heart attack. Heart problems can be caused by stressful factors, and should be taken seriously by consulting with your doctor. Other problems, which need anxiety treatment, is chest pain, muscle pain and headache. They all mess together to form an overall malaise and stop you from doing your daily work.

Anxiety also causes a substantial inability to act in your social roles. If you feel tired of life in general, perhaps that is due to anxiety factors in your daily routine. Anxiety stops you not only from doing your work properly, but it also obstructs you from enjoying your holidays, your weekends and your leisure activities. If you feel sick of it all, perhaps it is best to consult with your doctor and take the most suitable anxiety treatment.

Anxiety treatment should be done by a professional physician, although self treatment is also an option. You should always consult with a doctor before you take on specific treatment procedures. Your doctor will probably come with nice suggestions about appropriate ways to cure anxiety caused problems.

You may try some relaxing procedures to get rid of some anxiety caused psychological problems. If you feel depressed, youd better take some pills prescribed by your doctor. Take your time and do meditation on a daily basis. Take long and soothing baths. Enjoy your morning coffee, and dont rush up from your bed. Try to taste how your life feels, and not to worry too much about things that dont depend on you. By following these suggestions, you will gradually build up your own system for guarding against anxiety problems, and you will find that you are not affected by stressful factors any more.
