Few diamond shoppers can walk into a high-end jewelry store and buy a 5-carat, D color, Internally Flawless diamond with Ideal cut parameters. If you are like most diamond shoppers, you have a limited budget. However, you still want to get the biggest and most beautiful diamond within your budget. You can take some simple steps that will ensure you get the biggest diamond possible.

1) Diamonds have price per carat increases at the most popular carat weights (0.50, 1.00, 1.25, 1.50, 2.00, etc.) because that is what shoppers request when they go into a jewelry store. 4) All diamonds have inclusions; the key is what you can see with your eye. Once a diamond is clean to the eye (VS2 or good SI1 for brilliant cut shapes), higher clarity grades have no impact on the beauty or appearance of a diamond, they only add to the expense. Get the lowest clarity grade you are comfortable with and save a lot of money will no sacrifice in beauty.

5) The shape of the diamond can affect the millimeter size. Of course, you should always get the diamond shape you like best but some shapes do look larger than other shapes. Ovals, marquises and pear shaped diamonds generally look larger than round or square diamonds with the same carat weight.

6) Even diamonds with the same shape and carat weight can be different sizes. The cut of the diamond can influence the millimeter size. Shallower diamonds tend to be bigger in length and width than deeper diamonds. It is similar to two men each weighing 200 pounds, where the smaller waistline probably results in a taller man.

Woolly Mammoth

You may have seen drawings of the great Woolly Mammoths that wandered our earth freely over 10,000 years ago. These great creatures were larger than todays Indian elephants and their tusks could weigh up to 300 pounds each and measure over 16 feet in length. These great animals ultimately succumbed to the drastic climate changes accompanying great ice ages. Their skeletons and tusks were then naturally buried for eons in the frozen earth.

Fossil Ivory Tusks

The massive tusks, which have been hidden for thousands of years in the remote Arctic tundra of Alaska, Canada and Siberia, are unearthed many ways. Bush pilots sometimes spot the massive tusks jutting out from riverbanks in the Alaska tundra. Other times the tusks are unearthed as a natural result of gold mining or road construction activities. Regardless of the way they are discovered, fossil ivory is excavated in accord with applicable federal and state regulations. The beautiful fossil ivory hues of tan, brown and blue are the result of thousands of years of mineralization. The colors vary from tan to dark brown depending on the mineral deposits that were in the immediate soil surrounding the fallen mammoth. Each tusk exhibits unique character and beauty that is never duplicated in another piece of fossil tusk ivory.

Mammoth or Elephant Ivory

Although there are many similarities between fossil mammoth ivory and elephant ivory, there are identification methods that can distinguish the two. A feature used to identify mammoth ivory is a brownish or blue-green colored blemish called vivianite, an iron phosphate. While barely visible to the naked eye, it has a dramatic purple appearance if seen under an ultraviolet light source. Even if discolored, elephant ivory does not have this characteristic fluorescence of vivianite. Polished cross-sections of elephant and mammoth ivory dentine both display exquisite fine lines, cross-hatching or chevron marks called Schreger lines. However, the Schreger line angles, as measured by specialists, show distinctly different angles for elephant and mammoth ivory ~ another distinguishing characteristic.

International trade in elephant ivory has been largely shut down due to concern for the preservation of a living species. While still scarce and difficult to work with, this lustrous natural ivory possesses the same gem qualities of new ivory, without the stigma attached to illegal harvesting of endangered elephants.

7. Most jewelers used the Mohs scale which ranks diamond. This means that sapphires, rubies and garnets are higher in ranking and hence can scratch glass too.

8. Check closely the wear and tear on the diamond. For example, cubic zirconia is not as durable as a diamond and may show signs of wear and tear.

9. Finally, you should get diamond appraised by an independent appraiser. Appraiser must be affiliated with a professional organization such as the American Society of Appraisers. It is important to ask for a certificate indicating the value and characteristics of the diamond.

A Rich History

The ancient Celts who settled in Ireland many centuries ago, created enchanting designs in jewelry. Celtic craftsmen adapted ideas from nature to produce intricate designs based on simple motifs in silver and other metals. Silver and gold were used by Celtic craftsmen between 2000 BC to around 550 AD to create ornaments that were remarkably sophisticated. Spirals, animal motifs and later crosses were woven into Celtic rings, bracelets, brooches and pendants.

Celtic Crosses

When one thinks of Celtic jewelry, the Celtic cross often comes to mind first. It had its start primarily in Ireland. Celtic crosses are not just crosses that have Celtic knot work on them. The early crosses were equal-armed crosses, enclosed or backed by a circle. After the introduction of Christianity, it was more common to see the equal-armed cross on a pedestal, which then gave it a more elongated form.

The arms symbolize the four quarters of the earth, or the four elements, earth, air, fire, and water. The Celtic cross represents a bridge or passage between heaven and earth. The circle or center ring is a symbol of infinite love and specifically, the endlessness of Gods love. It is a symbol of eternity and the path of the sun in the sky. Given the spiritual ideas and power represented by this jewelry, it is easy to see why Celtic craftsmen were so dedicated to pristine perfection in crafting the Celtic cross.

This symbol represented the very highest ideals and aspirations of the Celts, and silver Celtic ornaments are among the most timeless. Today, there are literal interpretations of the ancient cross symbols, as well as more contemporary designs with hearts or other spiritual symbols.

Celtic Knots

The Celtic knot ornamental patterns were originally created for the Book of Kells, the best-known source of Celtic knots as well as other types of Celtic ornament. The Book of Kells is a fantastic collection of paintings that illuminate the four Gospels in Latin, written in 800 A.D. The knots were also used in other manuscripts and on monuments. They may have also been used in woodcarving and textiles, but these art works have not survived time.

Celtic knots are a prevalent design feature of silver Celtic jewelry. They are complete loops without beginning or end. It is said that good Celtic artists never leave a loose end on a strand and that pure knots should be unending. Celtic animal designs also interlace like knots, but end with feet, heads or tails.

Tension settings have become extremely popular over the last couple of years due to the chic, modern look of them. But lately there has been a backlash of individuals who dont think tension settings quite make the grade for securing the two-months salary that sits in them.

Judah Gutwein of Excel Diamonds, an online diamond retailer, says the company does not sell diamond tension settings. A recent thread on diamondvues.com quoted him as saying, it [the tension setting] will not (and cannot) protect the integrity of your diamond the same way that a 4/6 prong setting will. Many experts say that this type of ring does not give adequate protection to your diamond, especially if it is bumped or banged against a hard enough surface.

Others in the industry disagree they say that a tension setting is actually stronger than a prong setting so the stone will actually be more secure. In tension settings, the whole ring holds the stone, doing away with prongs, channels, bezels, or other enclosures. Advocates of tension settings compare a stone being held in place by the ring itself, to a stone being held in place by a claw just a fortieth of an inch thick (in prong settings).

So how exactly does tension setting work? A tension ring will undergo a work hardening process, which includes special alloying, hardening, and pressure treatment to ensure super strength. This process gives the metal a springiness that actually grips and holds onto the diamond. Each end of the metal is then given a groove called the seat into which the girdle of the diamond fits. The rings are made with two to three times more metal than traditional rings because the more metal, the stronger it will be. (This also accounts for the higher price tag in tension set rings.)

Jim Schultz, owner of Jamesallen.com, a professional online jeweler, has worn a tension set wedding ring for years. He says he is not worried at all about the structural integrity of his ring because his diamond is well protected by the design. JamesAllen displays close to 40 different tension set designs on its website, which Schultz says are some of his most popular rings. He says the common fear of tension settings should not be that the stone will fall out, but that too much of the girdle will be exposed, making it easier to damage. For this very reason, every diamond should be insured, regardless of the mounting, says Schultz.

So whether you chose a classic prong or a trendy tension setting, think about the past and the future. Make sure the ring has been made strong by a good design and that it has insurance to withstand lifes whoops.
