Do You Know That Social Phobia Is A Type Of Anxiety Disorder

Published at 12:15 am under Anxiety Center

Do you feel conscious about your surroundings? While walking down a lane do you feel conscious that people are staring at you? Do you know anyone who is scared to talk to a stranger, not even on phone? Or do you have a friend who is afraid of facing the interviews? Well, all these situations come under a single category - Social Phobia, or Social Anxiety Disorder. Social phobia is a least bothered anxiety disorder which can affect ones life to an unimaginable extent. It is characterized by overwhelming anxiety and unnecessary self-consciousness in routine social situations.

People with social anxiety disorder like to stay alone closeted. Even when they are surrounded by familiar people, they may feel overwhelmed and have the feeling that others are observing their every movement and criticizing their every thought. They may have a strong feeling that people around them are making negative judgments about them. They may usually feel embarrassed or humiliated by their own actions. The overwhelming fear of being watched and embarrassed at times becomes so severe that it interferes with work or school, and other ordinary activities. The physical symptoms associated with social phobia often include blushing, profuse sweating, shivering, nausea, and difficulty in talking.

While confidence in todays generation is increasing with each passing day, but at the same time the group of people affected by social phobia is also getting enlarged. Such people are unable to cope up with their life activities and suffer at every moment. Generally anxiety disorders are treated with medication, certain psychotherapies, or sometimes both.

But complete and careful diagnostic evaluation should be undertaken before starting with the treatment. Once the anxiety disorder is diagnosed, other coexisting things like alcohol, smoking and depression should be brought under control so that they dont hamper the treatment.

Generally popular medication like zyban and xanax are prescribed to the patients along with effective psychotherapies and coping techniques. If the person has already undergone a treatment earlier, he should inform his doctor of all the details including the name, dosage, duration and side effects, if any. If they received psychotherapy previously, they should describe the type of therapy, sessions they attended, and whether the therapy proved successful or valuable to them. .

Without treatment, social anxiety may prove as a big emotional problem but it can be treated with regular and complete medication, psychotherapies and coping strategies. One shouldnt give up if he is not finding the results. There can not be immediate results of anything.

Many of us have been through the terrifying fears and constant anxiety but winning over this tough emotional problem and coming out recovered and cheerful is not that difficult a task, all you have to do is to adopt a positive attitude towards life.
