Eczema Triggers are a Mystery
The triggers of eczema are often a complete mystery to the over 15 million people who suffer from it. While one substance may cause a full blown reaction in one person, another may be completely unaffected by it. Treating eczema is sometimes tricky, and quite frequently very frustrating and confusing. While one suggestion may not work for everyone, it certainly pays to do your research and implement tips for eczema prevention. Here are five tips that are sure to aid you in your search for eczema relief.
One of the most common places for eczema is the hands. Many household cleansers can irritate the skin, causing an eczema flare-up. Avoid any cleansers, soaps, or other hygiene products that may irritate your hands and cause eczema. For some affected by eczema, the simple use of soap and water is disastrous. For those with sensitivity to soap and/or water, wash hands only when necessary, and be sure to thoroughly dry your hands.
The use of gloves is key for your eczema prevention. When in contact with water, either while at work, or doing housework, be sure to use vinyl or rubber gloves to protect your hands. Be sure to remove the gloves frequently to dry out any sweat build up that may be occurring. When facing cold (and especially dry) conditions, always use gloves to shield your hands from these drying conditions. Dry, low humidity conditions will only serve to aggravate your eczema more. Stay clear of wool gloves, however, as they may irritate your skin.
Caring for your skin while youre in the tub or shower can definitely increase your success rate in the fight against eczema flare-ups. Bathing for a short amount of time (15-20 minutes) is a great way to allow your skin to absorb moisture without aggravating your eczema. Dry off carefully, (no rubbing) once you exit the tub or shower, and immediately moisturize your skin to lock in the moisture and prevent eczema symptoms. Always use gentle soaps, and use them sparingly.
In many cases, eczema prevention is fairly simple, but must be practiced consistently. If you notice that daily maintenance is less effective than usual, or that your eczema triggers are increasing, seek the advice of your doctor as prescription treatment may be required.
