Home Insurance - Do You Need A Home Security System?
In the good old days, people did not need security systems. Everyone knew his neighbor and a stranger was easily identifiable. But in these days of sophisticated technology, the question every home owner should ask themselves is, do I need security and why?
I'll share a few reasons that might inform your need for a security system and how it affects your home insurance rates.
- If you live in a high crime zone, you definitely need a security system and you'll have higher home insurance rates. If you are moving to a new community, find out the crime rating of that community. Consult your insurance agent for advice. This is necessary because insurance companies have criteria for zoning home into low crime or high crime areas. If you end up getting a home in a high crime area, you need to install a home security system. This would help lower your rates.
- If you live close to a police station, you may not need more than the basics of a home security system. Good locks and maybe an alarm system. You already have the advantage of a police station close to you. You can also expect lower rates.
- Ensure that your home is not a perfect target for burglars. If you live in a wooded environment (with plenty of trees and shrubs) it is more likely that burglars would have easy access to your home. I suggest that you make sure that the surroundings of your home are well lit. You would do well to get commensurate home security system. An old house that has weak doors and windows and also trees with strong and far reaching limbs is a perfect target for burglars. The tree limbs provide the ladder and the weak windows pose no resistance. You should consider cutting tree limbs to at least a hundred feet from the house. Reinforce the doors and windows and then consider the type of home security system that would qualify you for discounts.
Before you make a decision on the type of home security system to install, confer with your insurance agent who would advise you on what to do.
If you do not have a home owner's insurance policy, check several sites. Consult consumer guides and also ask your trusted friends and acquaintance about the insurance companies they use. All these would help you know what to look out for when you get quotes from several insurance companies.
