Home Insurance - Hurricane and Flood Insurance
Home insurance policy holders have often been found guilty of not knowing the details of their insurance policy. Most home insurance policy does not cover flood, hurricane or other natural disasters. If you live in a hurricane prone area, or a place that has had an occurrence of hurricane, flood or other natural disaster, you need to look at the other options available for home owner's insurance. You would need to buy separate floater for such occurrences.
Because of the cost of flood insurance, home owners are advised to get a separate floater from NFIP. Experts have advised that floods are possible in any of the 50 states. So even those who live in areas where they think are not prone to natural disasters, should consider buying flood insurance. Houses have been known to be fdamaged by melting snow or an overflowing creek or pond. It is better to be prepared than to be caught unawares.
Flood insurance has a waiting period of thirty days before the coverage can take effect. If you wait until there is a warning of flood before you rush out to buy a separate floater to protect you, it would not do you any good.
The NFIP provides you with the following:-
Replacement cost for the structure of your home for up to $250,000 in limits
Actual cash value coverage for your possessions which is the replacement cost coverage minus depreciation. The older your possessions the less you'll be paid. There may also be a sublimit on coverage of furniture that is stored in the attic or basement.
Replacement cost coverage to pay for the rebuilding of your house to how it was before the disaster up to NFIP policy limits.
Limited coverage.
If you therefore want more coverage, you can get what is known as excess flood insurance from specialized insurance companies.
Remember that the precautionary floater is not only for home owners. It is also available to home renters.
