Learning Tips for Overcoming Anxiety

Published at 4:55 am under Anxiety Center

To enjoy a happier, fuller life it is imperative that individuals who suffer from anxiety learn the steps to overcoming anxiety. Anxiety, while often confused with fear, is actually much different. Fear tends to involve apprehensive and uneasiness that is generally directed toward some type of concrete situation or object. In a nutshell, fear is associated with some type of event that could actually occur. Anxiety, on the other hand, tends to be far more subjective. It involves apprehension and uneasiness targeted toward something that is often vague or even unrecognized. Individuals who suffer from anxiety may not even be able to specify what it is they are anxious about. Furthermore, anxiety tends to be unrealistic and often out of proportion.

While worry can help us to better deal with certain issues, when that worry becomes constant it can interfere with our lives and our health. It can become so severe that it prevents us from performing our daily functions. While we all become anxious from time to time, when anxiety begins to interfere with out daily lives it is time to take action and learn how to overcome it.

Many people who suffer from anxiety simply try to avoid the entire issues by avoiding those things that make them anxious. While this may sound like a good idea in theory it generally will not work. In the short term, avoiding situations that make you anxious might make you feel better. The problem is that the anxiety will continue to return. Furthermore, it has a nasty habit of spreading to other events and situations.

Over time this can result in your avoiding numerous places and situations. So, while avoidance might initially make you feel better that relief is only temporary and over time you want to avoid more and more aspects of life. Obviously, this can be dangerous and is often how agoraphobia begins.

Learning to overcome anxiety rather than simply avoid is clearly the best choice to attain long lasting relief. One way to begin learning how to overcome your anxiety is to develop a support network. Consider the friends and family members in your life who you can rely on when you begin to feel anxious. Who can help you to think rationally when the anxiety begins to take over? This is an excellent starting point. It is also a good idea to consider joining a support group for individuals who suffer from anxiety. Speaking with other persons who suffer from the same symptoms and experiences as you can often help to put things into perspective. If your local area does not have an anxiety support group, think about joining one online.

Learn methods that will stop your anxiety before it grows out of control. Often, learning how to stop those negative thoughts that feed your anxiety can work wonders. This does take practice but it is well worth it. Consider these negative thought stoppers:

Stop
I am okay.
I can cope with this
This will pass.
I can deal with this. It is unpleasant but it is not dangerous.
