Movie Review - Troy - The Face That Launched A Thousand Sails

The character Helen of Troy in the movie Troy was initially offered to the renowned Indian beauty Aishwarya Rai who turned down the role and was then took up by Diane Kruger. This was set to be the face that launched a thousand sails and the character was seemingly the central plot that initiated the storyline of Wolfgang Petersens movie, Troy.

The movie started off by promising a huge battle scene like most epic movies, where the armies of Agamemnon and Thesaly formed up to fight one another. However, the battle scene was cut short to a swift shoulder stab movement executed by Brad Pitt who was almost a perfect fit for the legendary warrior Achilles. While the mighty Boagrius fell to his knees, Achilles roared into the front line of the legion, Is there NO ONE else? which became one of the trailer scenes that lured million of epic movie lovers worldwide to watch this spectacular movie.

If you have not watched Troy or even heard of the movie before, be prepared to put away your history books as the movie will not reiterate the writings of Homer. Oh well, even then the actual events of the history itself are debated among many scholars.

Anyway, Achilles is the hero you love to hate. His nemesis, Hector who is portrayed by Eric Bana is as equally good. Heck, both of them could even reverse their roles and they will still come out outshining one another. In fact, both of them had a little bet during the famous scene in front of the gates of Troy. The two actors decided that they had to pay the other for every accidental hit. At the end of the deal, Pitt had to pay Bana $750, while Bana owed Pitt nothing.

Well, back to the story. Paris, Hectors squeamish little brother who is played by Orlando Bloom decided to bring Helen back to his palace. Helens husband Menelaus was infuriated and decided to launch a war against Troy with the help of his brother Agamemnon. They commanded a massive computer-generated naval force that would penetrate the walls of Troy to retrieve Helen and to claim the City of Troy eventually.

The walls of Troy however could not be penetrated that easily even after the departure of Prince Hector. King Odysseus would then devise a scheming plan which is famously known as the Trojan horse that helped the Greeks to enter the city discreetly and later, burn and sack the city.

At the end of it, dead heroes were immortalized by their killings. And the horse became an annoying computer virus.
