Pause My life? Not Without My Dish Network DVR
I was watching Adam Sandlers movie Click the other night. In the film, he plays Michael Newman: a workaholic architect who tirelessly tries to keep his wife and kids happy. As fate would have it, Newman purchases a universal remote control that has the ability to pause, mute and rewind his life. The movie was worth noting because it made me think: how cool would it be to do the same things with my own time-shifting DVR? Whats a DVR, you ask? Well, read on.
It seems like most of us are always trying to find better ways to manage our time, especially when it comes to our personal lives. So we buy day planners, electronic organizers and any other device destined to find their way onto e-bay or the trash. Im guilty of this as anyone else. There is, however, one thing I dont ever see myself parting with for a long, long time. In fact, I love it more than no traffic on the 22 Freeway on a Monday morningand thats my DVR.
For those wondering what a DVR is, and what this wonderfully amazing device does, please let me enlighten you. A DVR, or Digital Video Recorder, is a device that records live television. Think of it as a tape-less VCR, or disc-less DVD player, with the same ability to fast forward, pause, rewind and skip through commercials. For the most part, all DVRs are very similar. Most have a Digital Tuner that allow them to decode a television signal, various outputs that connect to all televisions and most importantly, a computer hard drive for saving information. The hard drives range in storage size from 20 hours to Dish Networks 180-hour DVR. And Id be remised if I didnt mention the remote is so easy to operate, I havent thrown it against the wall yet.
The DVR is generically referred to as TIVO. Just as texting and Googling have made their way into the English language, TIVO-ing has found its way in there as well. Replay TV and TIVO were introduced to the world in 1999 and have changed the way we watch TV forever. Although TIVO is the well-known generic name for DVRs, Dish Network (the second largest satellite television company in the U.S.) has more DVRs in America than any other company. Why are people using Dish Networks DVRs more than its predecessor, TIVO? Its simple. They give them away for FREE to new customers.
So, are you still wondering how a DVR can manage your time, keep you sane and help you maintain all your relationships? Well now, you can finally watch your favorite TV shows based on your own personal schedule. In 40 minutes, A DVR lets you watch an hour long episode of Deal or No Deal while eating your Wheaties for breakfast. A DVR lets you watch all the new movies you wanted to see on HBO and Starz, but have been missing due to a lack of time. A DVR lets you record American Idol while you watch the NBA playoffs. And as I said before, Dish Network gives away this astonishing device for free.
When Dish Network installed my DVR, they took the time to show me how easy it was to enjoy. They also give me a High Definition DVR for free, giving my new Plasma TV a beautiful crisp picture. With a High Definition DVR, I can now record both HDTV and Standard definition programming.
So what is the drawback to a DVR? Well, sadly my mute button on the TV remote feels neglected and is becoming increasingly jealous of the DVR pause button. Now when the phone rings, my thumb finds its way to the pause button, so I dont miss a single moment of my favorite show. Better yet, when Im feeling a little parched, I pause the football game and take my time getting to know whats in my fridge.
So here is what I recommend you do. Get one of these remarkable life savers and try it yourself. If may not slice and dicewell, without voiding the warranty, but a DVR will allow you to record, pause, fast forward and rewind live television. You will be able to watch wardrobe malfunctions over and over again. And skip past Sanjaya trying to sing. Heck, if you didnt like reading this article, you could have skipped right pass it using your DVR. Hmmmm. A remote that lets you fast forward your life. That sounds like it could be a good movie.
