Television Production - Thanking People, Lesson Fifteen

One of the best things that you can do for yourself and for your producers is to remember to thank them. Gratitude is important. The producers that help out are working very hard for your show. Many times, they put their schedules aside or they make a special point of being there for your show. To do what is write, then show them the same consideration.

Just think of how you feel when you work on a show for community access. You schedule to be there; you might put some other possible appointments (that are not yet made) aside, and you arrive there at the studio, on time and ready to work. You surely would expect a thank you. Every producer thanks the workers in their own way, and at the very, very least, that way should be a verbal or written thank you.

Ways to remember to thank people:

Remember yourself, how it feels to work on other shows.

Know how you feel when you are confident that you have great producers working for you on your show.

Volunteer for their shows in turn. When their time comes around, remember to volunteer to help out in the studio and or in the control room.

Remember what it feels like to be taken for granted? (Some producers expect you to help but then do not thank you for your work). Most producers are considerate, polite, professional and kind, but there are a few that are the opposite. Everyone is human, so you will meet all kinds at the studio building.

Knowing these things and remembering these feelings will help you be professional and be polite, respectful and full of gratitude when it comes time to thank the producers that have been helpful to you.

There are ways that you can thank them, by thinking of them. Everyone is different, but here are a few suggestions:

You can call them (at times other than pre-production times). Let them know you appreciate them and that you are thinking of them. Anyone can think of someone when they need someone to help but it takes a professional to think of the volunteers when you do not need their help.

If you see something they are interested in, bring it to their attention in the future. (i.e. If you know a producer likes football and there are special football shows coming up, remind them just in case they missed the announcements. That is just an example, you can do that with any topic.

You can bring food, home-cooked food to the productions for either before or after the show.

You can bring snacks and reading materials to the production.

You can help on their productions or help them in other ways if they do not produce their own shows.

You can offer recommendations and or references to the producers who have helped your show.

The producers, both new and seasoned, are valuable assets to your show. Let them know that in as many ways as you can. Gratitude can be expressed in many ways. Choose the one or two that works for you and for your producers. I would like to hear from the reade on other ways producers can show gratitude to other producers. Everyone is different and everyone values different things in this world. Spiritual people have another way of thanking people --without bringing it to their attention. Prayers work, and prayers work to change things for the better in the lives of everyone. You can pray for your producers, and for their friends and family. (No, you do not need to name names when you pray. God is Almighty and He already knows the names of the people that you are praying about or praying for).
