Treating Performance Anxiety

While performance anxiety can be disturbing it is important to understand that with proper treatment you can overcome many of the symptoms associated with this disorder. Performance social anxiety is generally linked to a fear of interaction with others, many times in a social situation. An individual suffering from this form of social anxiety may experience feelings of self-consciousness and inferiority. In such a situation, the individual may feel as though they are being negatively judged by others. These feelings can develop in a variety of situations, including:

  • Being criticized or teased
  • Being introduced to new people
  • Being observed or watched
  • Being the center of attention
  • Meeting individuals in authority
  • Being in social encounters, particularly with strangers
  • Functioning in interpersonal relationships
When an individual with this type of social anxiety begins to feel anxious and panicked during these types of situations they may begin experiencing a number of physical symptoms, including:
  • Chest pain
  • Hyperventilation
  • Palpitations
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Lightheadness
  • Headache
  • Faintness
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
These symptoms can become debilitating and even result in sufferers from this form of social anxiety from fully participating in a normal social life. With proper treatment; however, the symptoms of performance social anxiety can be alleviated. One of the first steps toward recovery is to educate yourself about this specific type of anxiety and learn as much as possible. Taking the time to develop an understanding and awareness of this disorder is imperative in achieving recovery.

Cognitive behavior therapy has proven to be quite helpful for many in treating the symptoms related to this type of social anxiety. This form of treatment does require a serious commitment in order to reach completion and recovery as cognitive behavior therapy typically involves much repetition. A large key to this form of treatment is practice, practice and more practice in order to cement cognitive methods securely in your mind to achieve a true change. Over time, with proper treatment and practice, these methods will eventually become automatic; replacing, older, more debilitating habits that led to your anxiety in social situations.

Many people also find that some forms of immersion therapy can also be helpful in recovering from this type of social anxiety. Such treatment methods might involve slowly working toward their goals by role-playing, using a camcorder for activities such as mock job interviews and engaging in small talk during practice sessions.

It can also be helpful to participate in a therapy group that is dedicated to performance anxiety. Participating in such a group can help you to gradually work on the problems that lead to your anxiety in social situations. Ideally, it is best to look for a group that is very low key and does not pressure you into doing something before you are ready to do it. You should be encouraged to work at your own pace.

Recovering from performance anxiety does require time; however, with commitment and a dedication to getting better, you can begin to alleviate the symptoms you feel when faced with social and performance situations.
