Types Of Anxiety Disorders

Published at 2:20 am under Anxiety Center

In medicine, one of the keys to effectively treating diseases and disorders is having the right information on the condition. This is because the right information, which is usually a result of various tests, can properly guide the physician and the patient on the mode of treatment. This is very true for most, if not all diseases, including anxiety disorders, because being able to get the right information on a specific type of anxiety disorder increases the chances of effective treatment. One of the ways to get this information is to have knowledge of the specific types of anxiety disorders.

Types

There are at least nine identified types of anxiety disorders, include generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), specific phobia, separation anxiety, school avoidance, and agoraphobia.

GAD is characterized by excessive worrying about different issues for a period of at least six months wherein the person suffers from uncontrollable physical symptoms, including palpitations. Social anxiety is characterized by a constant fear of being judged by other people and can lead to feeling really uncomfortable in the presence of other people. On the other hand, people who suffer from OCD usually exhibit repetitive behavior borne out of their fear that not doing things over and over again would result in a bad situation. People who suffer from panic disorders find it hard to deal with them because, apart from the panic attacks that are triggered by certain things or situations, panic attacks can also occur as a result of the fear of having another panic attack.

For people who suffer from PTSDs, reminders of a traumatic experience that they went through in the past can trigger the anxiety attack. On the other hand, certain objects and situations are what trigger panic attacks among people who suffer from specific phobias. Separation anxiety is usually found in young children who exhibit symptoms of panic and anxiety in anticipation of being separated from their parents or their ?protectors.? Another common disorder among children is school avoidance wherein the child would exhibit panic in anticipation of being in school where the source of fear might be, which might include bullies. Lastly, people with Agoraphobia usually avoid going out of their homes as a way of avoiding situations that can lead to a panic attack.

One of the keys to effective treatment is the right information on diseases. This involves having knowledge on the different types of anxiety disorders so that physicians can pick the right mode of treatment.
