Understanding the Physical Symptoms of Anxiety and Stress

If youve been feeling stressed out lately, its quite possible you may also be suffering from physical symptoms of anxiety and stress. While stress is a perfectly normal part of life and can even help to keep us on our toes it can lead to negative side effects. In small doses stress and anxiety is helpful but when presented in large quantities anxiety and stress can be quite harmful in a physical sense. The manner in which the negative impacts of stress and anxiety manifests itself can vary. For example, in some cases physical symptoms can come in the form of physical illness. In other cases; however, these side effects of stress and anxiety may result in psychological issues. When either of these types of illnesses persist over a long period of time it can lead to serious health problems.

Just a few of the physical symptoms of anxiety and stress include:

Trembling or twitching

Sweating

Headaches

Muscle tension

Abdominal pain

Dry mouth

Other symptoms which can also accompany anxiety include the following:

Irregular heart beat

Dizziness

Rapid breathing

Fatigue

Diarrhea

Frequent need to urinate

Irritability

Decreased concentration

Problems sleeping

Sexual problems

It is important to keep in mind that such symptoms may not necessarily indicate the presence of an anxiety disorder. Generally, anxiety disorders involve anxiety that has become excessive. These types of anxiety disorders include specific phobias, generalized anxiety disorder, social phobia and obsessive-compulsive disorder. When left untreated the symptoms of anxiety can manifest itself into more serious medical conditions. If youre not sure whether the symptoms you are experiencing could be related to an anxiety disorder, it is important to see a health professional.

Other situations can also result in some similar physical symptoms such as withdrawal from certain types of drugs. A poor diet that is low in necessary vitamins can also result in many of the same symptoms produced by anxiety and stress.

The good news is that there are many ways in which the physical symptoms of anxiety and stress can be effectively managed and reduced. One way to do this is by charting your symptoms to determine when they seem to appear and at what times they increase in frequency and/or severity. This activity will help you to determine the root cause of your symptoms and to better anticipate their appearance. In some cases, just being able to identify the true cause of your anxiety and stress can be quite beneficial.

After the cause of your physical symptoms of anxiety and stress has been identified, of course, its a good idea to consider ways in which you can begin to free yourself from the problems that are causing these symptoms. This may or may not be possible immediately but is important to begin looking at how you can free yourself from these traps.

By taking a deep look at your physical symptoms of anxiety and stress you can begin to discover the cause, beginning the journey toward healing.
