What Are Stretch Marks and How to Deal With It?

When the skin is stretched by rapid growth, it will bounce back. It is then seen in the form of scarring which is called stretch marks. Rapid growth of the skin can take place during pregnancy, weight gain or extreme weight loss.

Stretch marks occur in the middle layer of the skin called as dermis. As long as there is support with the dermis, you will never see any stretch marks. When the skin is constantly stretched, the dermis breaks down leading to stretch marks.

Stretch marks can be seen at different locations of the body. Stretch marks mostly appear in places where large amount of flat is stored. They are found in places like the abdomen, breasts, upper arms, underarms, thighs, hips and buttocks. However, stretch marks by itself pose no health risk.

Mostly women develop stretch marks to some degree during pregnancy. Men and women develop stretch marks on abdominal area, thighs, hips, upper arms or on the lower back too. Stretch marks can develop during obesity and from rapid muscle growth by during regular exercise.

Stretch marks can be treated by various methods. The intensity of a successful treatment depends upon the age, your tone of the skin and also your diet. You can use treatments like chemical peels or you can take help of the latest technology of laser surgery. Have plenty of water. You must consume food that promotes skin health. Eat foods such as nuts, fish, which are rich in zinc. Vitamin A and C foods, in the form of carrots and citrus fruits are also recommended to eat.
